This is a love story with a wild place that has impacted my life deeply. For ten guide seasons I've worked Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon River, the "Emerald Queen" of multi-day river trips. She cuts through a 2.5 million acre span of wild, roadless beauty called The Frank Church Wilderness. It is a rugged and raw country. For years, my friends and I have floated by her many tributaries and wondered what adventure lies upstream. Finally, the opportunity arose when Kyle Smith rallied this exploration of Rapid River, Loon Creek and Camas Creek. Middle Fork guides Todd Richey and Mike Bond also joined the trip. Throughout the journey, the three friends discuss how wilderness, kayaking, and the guide lifestyle has helped shape their lives and how it will continue to.
