In 2006, during rehearsals for a film, I was fortunate enough to spend four days listening to the first hand accounts of women who had served during the war. The stories they told us, so totally at odds with what I’d been taught, have been a subject of intrigue ever since. As such, when I read Little Bird, the story of a woman who totally defies social expectation, leaving behind her child in search of ‘freedom’, I rejoiced. Not because she left behind her child, but because here was a story that challenged the age old narrative, which is something that really excites me as a director.
