Vibrations is a short documentary film by Welsh musician Geraint Rhys. Shortly after releasing his song ‘Visca La Terra’ about the Catalan independence struggle, he travelled to Barcelona to understand the role music played in the build up to the October the 1st referendum. Mixing interviews with a poetic narrative that he wrote after returning from Catalunya, this piece shows the power that the vibrations of sound can have in instigating a revolution to challenge state power. About the film Geraint says: ‘Being fully aware of the significance of the referendum, I travelled to Barcelona to understand the extent music and sound played in the build up to the vote. The film shows not only how music was integral in bringing people together and for creating spaces of solidarity, but how it was also used as an amplifier of people’s histories and emotions. Everywhere you went sounds filled the streets, whether it be the chants of the people, or the drone of police helicopters. In this piece I wanted to concentrate on the unifying aspects. Music is such a natural part of everyday life and I wanted to understand how its presence is inevitable in any political struggle, wherever you are in the world. I think what comes through is that music is more than just a tool of defiance, it is a universal language, an embodied experience that has the power to infiltrate our minds, bodies and souls unlike anything else.
