Empowerment is a key element in the Mariposa County Library’s adult literacy program. It empowers volunteer tutors by giving them an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with those who want to learn. It empowers learners by helping them achieve lifelong goals, from learning to read and write to passing a high school equivalency test to becoming a U.S. citizen. And, it empowers the local community by providing a better educated workforce and adults who are better equipped to cope with everyday situations, while serving as inspirational role models for the next generations. Trained volunteers meet with learners on a one-to-one basis, providing encouragement when life’s challenges seem insurmountable, as well as helping them acquire the practical skills they need to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. Empathy is built from shared experience. Some of our tutors have been faced with their own set of life-altering challenges that have shaped the way they approach teaching. In this film two of our tutors and their learners will share their stories –of themselves as individuals, of themselves as partners in a struggle to succeed and of themselves as part of the larger community. They are stories of hardship and courage, tenacity and hope, stories unique to the individual that will strike a common chord in us all.
