Dana Helton has a problem telling fantasy from reality. And the longer she lets her imagination grow, the closer it comes to killing her. Suicide Friends is a passion project of mine since 2002. It started as a film centered on depression and the mind. The short film tells the story of Dana Helton, a girl with a troubling imagination. After a visit to the doctor's office she starts seeing a strange butterfly who eventually talks to her and asks for help. As Dana tries to help the small insect she finds that the seemingly harmless things she's doing are actually illusions with terrible results in the real world. To reflect Dana’s mind the film is a hybrid project combining traditional, CG, and stop motion. Dana is a 2D character while the world and her imaginary friends are CG with her nightmares or “fears” in stop motion. The process of adding Dana into the shots is inspired by “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” with her shadows and lighting being animated separately and added in after effects with blurring to help blend her into the scene. With the funding from this contest I hope to complete what's become the most challenging part of this film, animating Dana. The stop motion elements have been made, the CG portions have been created and shots are being rendered. The main piece I need is Dana and she's proving difficult for one animator to handle alone. Vote for the dark animated film Suicide Friends so we can hire animators and complete this film!
